What usually goes through your mind when you hear that you are requested to take an assessment for a job opportunity? Some people think it’s just another interview, some believe it’s a pass-fail test, and some get so scared they don’t take it at all. An assessment is actually just a great method to prove to your potential employer that you have what it takes.
What is an assessment and what does it measure?
An assessment is a tool or a number of tests designed to evaluate the skills required for certain positions. Some employment assessments measure language skills, such as Aptis, IELTS, TOEFL, and TOEIC. Yes, some companies might actually look for applicants who have already taken international English Language assessments, but one can argue that they are mostly required for content related positions.
Others might be aptitude tests, designed to measure cognitive abilities or knowledge, or psychometric assessments to give the companies a better understanding of the candidate’s personal traits. Why do companies ask for assessments?

Some of the most well-known companies in the MENA region rely on assessments. For example, P&G relies on its own reasoning test, Nestle, PWC, and Hindawi rely on English proficiency tests, while the British Council depends on Aptis. There are two different scenarios here, First are the companies that have developed their own technical or aptitude assessments and invite their applicants to take them, which means they own the scores and keep them to themselves. The second is those you seek to take yourself, without a direct invitation from a company. We can easily say that assessments, whether they’re technical, general, linguistic or certificate-based, are definitely one of those tools.
Another thing that is really interesting about taking an assessment is that you get to know a little bit more about yourself when faced with a challenge that you usually wouldn’t face.
